The U.S. Department of Justice ADA Title II final rule (April 2024) requires public colleges and universities to make their web content and digital documents, including PDFs, Word, and Excel files, conform to WCAG 2.1 AA. DOJ extended the compliance dates in April 2026: the deadline is April 26, 2027 for entities serving a population of 50,000 or more, and April 26, 2028 for smaller entities.
Providing a separate "accessible version" is not sufficient under the "Separate Is Not Equal" principle. The original document itself must be accessible.
